Migrate from Wix, Jimdo or other platforms
If you currently run your establishment on Wix, Jimdo, IONOS Homepage Builder, Squarespace or another website builder and want to switch to Sosta — this is the step-by-step guide.
Your existing address (e.g. deinhaus.de) is moved to Sosta — visitors still land with you. The old platform can be shut down afterwards.
For WordPress there is a dedicated guide with the right export tools: Migrating from WordPress →
Overview of steps
The basic flow is the same for all builder platforms. Platform-specific details come below.
- Back up content from the old platform (screenshots, copy/paste)
- Build your Sosta site (use the editor, move all content)
- Link imprint + privacy policy (DE obligation)
- Check the preview
- "Decouple" the domain at the old platform (take over DNS control)
- Switch the DNS record to Sosta
- Wait for TLS + go live with the Sosta site
- Cancel the old platform (earliest 4 weeks later)
If you use Wix
Wix has no content export tool. Texts and images have to be moved manually — that sounds more effortful than it is, since your site probably has 5–10 sections.
Back up Wix content
- Texts: go through every page, copy all texts into a Word/Google doc as backup.
- Images: right-click → "Save image as…" for each image. Alternative: download all images via the Wix Media Manager.
- Screenshots: take a full-page screenshot of every page — in case a detail idea is missing later.
Decouple the domain at Wix
If you bought your domain (e.g. deinhaus.de) directly at Wix: you have to release it or transfer it to another DNS provider so you can set the DNS CNAME to Sosta.
- Wix dashboard → "Settings" → "Domains"
- At your domain → enable "Release domain" or "Manage DNS"
- If the domain was bought at Wix: transfer to a German provider (Hostinger, IONOS) — this takes 5–14 days. Plan accordingly!
If the domain is with Wix and you have to transfer it: start that before building the Sosta site. Otherwise you sit with a finished site and cannot connect it.
Keep the Wix account
Keep the Wix account for 3–6 months after the DNS switch on the cheapest tariff. That way you can still access content if you notice something. After 6 months close the account.
If you use Jimdo
Jimdo is very similar to Wix. There is no export tool, all content is copied manually.
Back up Jimdo content
- Texts: go through, copy, store in a doc.
- Images: in the Jimdo editor → click the image → "Download original size" for each image.
- Screenshots as fallback.
Domain setup at Jimdo
Jimdo offers domain management via external providers (e.g. a Hostinger domain is "linked" inside Jimdo). Check:
- Is your domain with Jimdo itself? → cancel at Jimdo + transfer to an external provider (Hostinger/IONOS), 5–14 days lead time
- Is your domain with an external provider (Hostinger, IONOS) and only "linked"? → remove the link in Jimdo, then set the CNAME directly at the provider to Sosta
If you use Squarespace, IONOS Homepage Builder or another platform
The pattern is always the same: back up content → build the Sosta site → switch DNS → cancel old platform.
- Squarespace: an export tool exists (Settings → Advanced → Import/Export) but only produces an XML file in WordPress format — does not help directly for Sosta, so a manual copy/paste path.
- IONOS MyWebsite / IONOS builder: no export tool, manual copy/paste. The domain is already at IONOS, you can set the CNAME directly without a transfer.
- Custom CMS / your own static site: you probably have FTP access. Download everything (HTML, images), copy the texts. DNS setup as with any other provider.
- No website yet? Then it is easier: just build the Sosta site + buy a domain at a German provider (Hostinger from €1/month) + set the CNAME. No "migration" stress.
Build the Sosta site (same for everyone)
Go to Website and use the editor. Typical block order:
- Hero (greeting, prominent image)
- About
- Setcard grid (your active workers — automatically live from Sosta)
- Gallery (rooms, atmosphere)
- Opening hours
- Contact form
Upload images: in the respective block click "Choose image" → drag the file in or pick from your computer. We automatically create WebP variants for fast loading times.
Link imprint + privacy policy (DE obligation)
Before going live: go to Website → Settings → section "Legal + footer" and enter your imprint URL and privacy URL.
If you had imprint/privacy on Wix or Jimdo before: those URLs are shut down with the old platform. You need the content as standalone pages. Options:
- Set the texts as static HTML pages on your hosting (no CMS needed)
- Set them up as a Sosta "text block" page (we are working on a dedicated legal-pages function)
- For a lawyer review of your privacy policy: budget €200–400. For the adult industry the policy is somewhat more specific (special categories, GDPR Art. 9).
Switch DNS
Guides for the 5 most important German DNS providers:
Go live + cancel the old platform
As soon as TLS status in the settings shows "ISSUED", go to Website → Go live and click "Go live".
Let the old Wix/Jimdo/Squarespace account run for 4 more weeks after the DNS switch. If you find something afterwards you want to take over, you still have access. After 4 weeks you can cancel safely — check your contract terms for notice (often monthly cancellation with builder tools).
Move your email mailbox too?
If your builder contract includes an email address (e.g. kontakt@deinhaus.de): Sosta does not offer email hosting. Options:
- Email tariff at the DNS provider: Hostinger, IONOS, Strato offer email mailboxes from €1–3/month
- Specialized email provider: Mailbox.org (DE, privacy-friendly) from €3/month
- Google Workspace / Microsoft 365: from €6/month, useful if you also need cloud documents
