Migrate from Wix, Jimdo or other platforms
If you currently run your establishment on Wix, Jimdo, IONOS Homepage Builder, Squarespace or another website builder and want to switch to Sosta — this is the step-by-step guide.
Your existing address (e.g. www.deinhaus.de) will point to Sosta; your visitors still end up with you. Anyone who types the domain without www also gets there via a redirect at your provider. The old platform can be shut down afterwards.
For WordPress there is a dedicated guide with the right export tools: Migrating from WordPress →
Overview of the steps
The basic process is the same for all website builders. Platform-specific quirks are covered below.
- Back up content from the old platform (screenshots, copy/paste)
- Build your Sosta site (use the editor, move all content)
- Link imprint + privacy policy (required in DE)
- Check the preview
- "Decouple" the domain at the old platform (take over DNS control)
- Switch the DNS record to Sosta
- Wait for TLS + go live with the Sosta site
- Cancel the old platform (no earlier than 4 weeks later)
If you use Wix
Wix has no content export tool. Texts and images have to be moved manually — that sounds like more work than it is, since your website probably has 5–10 sections.
Back up Wix content
- Texts: go through every page and copy all texts into a Word or Google document as a backup.
- Images: right-click → "Save image as…" for each image. Alternatively, download all images via the Wix Media Manager.
- Screenshots: take a full-page screenshot of every page — in case you need a detail later.
Decouple the domain at Wix
If you bought your domain (e.g. deinhaus.de) directly from Wix, you have to release it or transfer it to another DNS provider so that you can point the CNAME to Sosta.
- Wix dashboard → "Settings" → "Domains"
- For your domain → enable "Release domain" or "Manage DNS"
- If the domain was bought from Wix: transfer it to a German provider (Hostinger, IONOS) — this takes 5–14 days. Plan accordingly!
If the domain is with Wix and you have to transfer it, start the transfer before building the Sosta site. Otherwise you'll be left with a finished website you can't connect.
Keep the Wix account
Keep the Wix account on the cheapest plan for 3–6 months after the DNS switch. That way you can still access content if you notice anything missing. Close the account after 6 months.
If you use Jimdo
Jimdo is very similar to Wix. There is no export tool; all content has to be copied manually.
Back up Jimdo content
- Texts: go through them, copy them, save them in a document.
- Images: in the Jimdo editor → click the image → "Download original size" for each image.
- Screenshots as a fallback.
Domain setup at Jimdo
Jimdo offers domain management via external providers (e.g. a Hostinger domain is "linked" in Jimdo). Check:
- Is your domain with Jimdo itself? → cancel at Jimdo + transfer to an external provider (Hostinger/IONOS), 5–14 days lead time
- Is your domain with an external provider (Hostinger, IONOS) and only "linked"? → remove the link in Jimdo, then point the CNAME to Sosta directly at the provider
If you use Squarespace, IONOS Homepage Builder or another platform
The pattern is always the same: back up content → build the Sosta site → switch DNS → cancel the old platform.
- Squarespace: there is an export tool (Settings → Advanced → Import/Export), but it only produces an XML file in WordPress format — that doesn't help directly with Sosta, so it's manual copy/paste.
- IONOS MyWebsite / IONOS builder: no export tool, manual copy/paste. The domain is already with IONOS, so you can set the CNAME directly without a transfer.
- Custom CMS / your own static site: you probably have FTP access. Download everything (HTML, images) and copy the texts across. DNS setup works as with any other provider.
- No website yet? Then it's easier: just build the Sosta site, buy a domain from a German provider (Hostinger from €1/month) and set the CNAME.
Build the Sosta site (same for everyone)
Go to Website and use the editor. Typical block order:
- Welcome header, with a large image
- About us
- Setcards (your active talents, automatically live from Sosta)
- Gallery (rooms, atmosphere)
- Opening hours
- Contact form
Upload images: in the relevant block, click “Select image” and drag the file in or choose it from your computer. JPEG and PNG are allowed; we automatically create smaller versions for fast loading.
Link imprint + privacy policy (required in DE)
Before going live: if you have your own pages for the legal notice and privacy policy, enter their addresses under Website settings, section “Legal + footer”.
If your imprint and privacy policy were previously on Wix or Jimdo, those URLs will be shut down along with the old platform. You need the content as standalone pages. Options:
- Put the texts up as static HTML pages on your hosting (no CMS needed)
- Fill in your details in the Manager under Legal notice. From these, Sosta creates the legal notice and privacy policy, and your website links to both
- To have a lawyer review your privacy policy, budget €200–400. In the adult industry the policy is somewhat more specific (special categories, GDPR Art. 9).
Switch DNS
Guides for these five providers:
Go live + cancel the old platform
As soon as the TLS certificate shows “Active”, go to Website → Go live and click “Go live”.
Keep the old Wix/Jimdo/Squarespace account running for 4 more weeks after the DNS switch. If you later find something you want to bring over, you still have access. After 4 weeks you can safely cancel — check your contract terms for the notice period (website builders can often be cancelled monthly).
Moving your mailbox (optional)
If your website builder contract includes an email address (e.g. kontakt@deinhaus.de): Sosta does not offer email hosting. Options:
- Email plan with your DNS provider: Hostinger, IONOS and Strato offer mailboxes from €1–3/month
- Specialised email provider: Mailbox.org (DE, privacy-friendly) from €3/month
- Google Workspace / Microsoft 365: from €6/month, useful if you also need cloud documents
